DIY Bamboo Mirror

Today, I am bringing you another project from our bedroom that will hopefully be done today.  Originally, I wanted to do an Asian symbol medallion made out of bamboo.  Like this.

I picked out a symbol that I thought would be easy to cut using bamboo, but once we started cutting the pieces it wasn't looking like I envisioned so I scrapped the idea.

I still wanted to use the bamboo that I already had.  After thinking about it for awhile, I came up with this.

Here is what I used to make this mirror.

Bamboo (cut into little pieces at varying heights)
Kolja Mirror (Ikea)
Hot glue & glue gun

We used a mitre saw to cut the pieces and the bamboo got splintery (if that is a word) so we had to sand each an every piece of bamboo.  If I had it to do over, I would find another way to cut them so that the splinters were avoided.  I also had to paint by hand the outer part of the bamboo black.  Another time consuming task.  But the rest is very easy to do and can be done in about 45 minutes.

After all the prep work, start hot gluing your bamboo onto the mirror.  For installation purposes, we had to leave a rim of mirror exposed on the outer edge to attach the mirror hanging hardware.  Once the bamboo is all glued on, hang it on the wall.

This mirror really finished off this wall.  I love it.  It was really easy and unlike most of my projects, I had no complications while making it.  So that makes me happy.

What do you think?  Are you excited to see the rest of the bedroom?  Well, it won't be too long.  Please come back to check it out or you can sign up to have all my posts sent straight to you email here

  4. Hi, Lauren! Love how the mirror turned out! Sometimes the plans we make originally, turn into something we never expected and most often it's better than we could have imagined. Great wall color too! Stopping by from Metamorphosis Monday and newly following. Have a great week! ~Mary

    1. Thanks Mary. You are right. I probably like this mirror better than the asian medallion. So it all works out. Thanks for following.
